O2 UK's Staff Vote for Strike Action

Telefonica O2 staff in the UK have voted to reject the company's "final pay" offer of two per cent. The consultative ballot closed last week with an overwhelming 90 per cent of those voting rejecting the offer. The Communication Workers Union (CWU) says that it is now seeking a meeting with O2 to recommence negotiations.

CWU assistant secretary Ian Cuthbert, said: "All along O2 has argued that it's "market leading" offer would be accepted. CWU members in O2 have shown that not to be true in the most dramatic fashion.

"From the outset the union's negotiating team pledged that it would accept the outcome of the ballot whatever the result. We now hope that O2 will listen to the collective voice of employees and enter into meaningful talks for an improved pay settlement."

The consultative ballot was run by Electoral Reform Services and the turnout was 36 per cent.
