NTT DoCoMo to Offer Unlocked Mobile Phones from Next Year
Japan's has announced that it will start unlocking its handsets so that they can be sold SIM-free from next April. The move is in response to a request from the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry last month for mobile phone companies to make their handsets "SIM-free," thereby allowing users greater freedom in choosing handsets and service providers.
NTT Docomo is the first mobile network operator to have responded to the ministry's request.
From next April, handsets will be still sold as locked to the network - but will be unlocked upon a customer request. However, the operator is not required to make all handsets available in this manner and it is not yet clear what limits DoCoMo plans to implement on the service.
