Estimated 5 Million Phones Face Disconnection in Tanzania

Tanzania is expected to block around five million unregistered phones tomorrow (14th July) after a twice-extended deadline to register prepay accounts with the networks expires.

Prof John Nkoma, Director General of the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), told The EastAfrican that the government had extended the deadline from June 30 to July 14 to allow more people to register with their respective mobile operators.

Prof Nkoma said that about 13 million SIM cards had so far been registered since June 2009 and that only five million SIM cards will be blocked starting July for non-adherence to the mandatory registration.

The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) had originally set a deadline of the end of last year, then extended it again to the end of June. After the new deadline, any unregistered SIM card will be locked for up to 90 days unless it is registered. A locked SIM card can not be used to make or receive calls or use sms, but if it is registered within 90 days, it will be unlocked, and can then be used. Any locked SIM card not registered by 30th September 2010 will be permanently deleted.
