Nigeria Planning Additional Radio Spectrum Sales by 2012

Nigeria's telecoms regulator is reported to be planning to issue six additional telecoms operator licenses be the end of 2012. Citing unnamed sources, local Punch newspaper said that four licenses would be released in the 2.5Ghz band by the end of this year, with two operators getting space in the 700Mhz bands during 2012.

The spectrum is primarily expected to be used for backhaul services in the absence of reliable landline services.

The President, Nigeria Internet Group, Mr. Lanre Ajayi recently noted that the regulator would have difficulty awarding licenses for BWA/WiMAX services as the 2.3 GHz, 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz bands are either already in use or being argued over in the courts.

In related news, the Acting Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Dr. Bashir Gwandu wanred that any restrictions to deployment of masts and towers across the country by any government agency, state or local council would negate the efforts of government to attract investments in the sector and worsen the quality of services in the industry. There have been attempts by local authorities to clamp down on tower deployments, citing variously environmental aspects or planning restrictions.
