Fewer Inactive SIM Cards in Hungary

This past June, the total number of customers at Hungary's three mobile operators fell by 16,000 to 11.886 million. However, the number of those considered active customers, that is, subscribers having indeed made or received a call within the last three months, grew by 15,000 to 10.804 million, reports the National Telecommunications Authority of Hungary (NHH).

The flash report issued by NHH is based on data provided voluntarily by the operators. The number of subscribers using broadband ADSL via conventional phone lines continued to decrease in May. This technology had 806,000 subscribers at the end of March, 804,000 a month later and 801,000 at the end of May.

The number of subscribers using broadband via cable grew in May by 12,000, reaching a total of 1.028 million. The major cable providers featured in the flash report, accounting for 80-85 percent of the cable modem market, saw their customer base expand from 846,000 in April to 856,000.

In May, the number of registered active landlines and cable modems fell from 3.021 to 3.015 million, according to operators included in the report. Regarding the total number of lines, the number of conventional landlines fell by approximately 19,000 to 2.502 million, while the number of telephone lines operating via cable rose from 500,000 to 512,000. Landline coverage of households dwindled from 60.91 percent at the end of April to 60.84 percent, whereas the number of active main phone lines per 100 people fell to 30.13 from 30.19 a month earlier.

In May 2010, subscribers spoke 4 million minutes longer on their phones than in April, logging a total of 448 minutes of calls. The average duration of calls initiated per main line increased from 147.1 to 148.8 minutes, with the average duration of a single call remaining at 3.13 minutes. 413,000 customers - a drop of 3,000 from April's figures - took advantage of carrier selection, spending a total of 29 million minutes on the phone, as opposed to 28 million a month earlier.

Within the framework of number portability, approximately 9,000 numbers were ported between service providers during May. Ever since the introduction of this service back in January 2004, subscribers have ported a total of 521,000 numbers.
