Nokia Headhunting for a Replacement CEO
Nokia is reported to have started hunting for a new CEO to replace the current chief executive, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo who has held the post since 2006. Citing anonymous people familiar with the situation, the Wall Street Journal said that the company had already approached people about the job.
"They are serious about making a change,'' one person familiar with the matter said. Nokia board members are "supposed to make a decision by the end of the month,'' that person said.
The CEO of a major U.S. high-tech company recently spurned Nokia's approach after meeting with Chairman Jorma Ollila, because the candidate wasn't interested in moving to Finland, this source said. Nokia also has flown in at least one other U.S. based executive to interview for the CEO job, the source added.
The Reuters news agency also confirmed through its own sources that Nokia is actively searching to hire a replacement for Mr. Kallasvuo.
The company recently shook up its management as it struggles in the smartphone market to compete with Android based phones and the Apple iPhone range. Nokia still retains a 40% marketshare in the mobile phone industry - as it targets the middle and lower end market where net units sold vastly outstrip the smartphone market.
